Hola Janta!
Grandmothers have always been our first and best friends because they've always protected us from our parents' anger, mood swings, and whatnot. Grandparents are an open book that has all the pages of their life long journey packed with endless experiences.
I have always looked upon my Grandma for the routine she followed to keep herself healthy in every way possible. Here, I am sharing a few of the secrets she shared with me in my early teenage for healthy-looking skin and hair.

Amla
Amla is also known as Indian Gooseberry. It has great importance in Ayurveda due to its medicinal properties. Amla is a great source of Vitamin C and antioxidants. Consistent and prolong intake of amla not only leads to healthy hair and glowing skin but also improves eyesight and boosts the immune system. Amla can be taken in various ways: Dried amla powder, Amla Murabba, Amla juice, or Amla Candies. High in Antioxidants, Amla is best known for slowing the greying of hair and strengthening it.
How to use:
Take one tablespoon of Amla powder, mix it with one tablespoon of sour curd, and then apply it on your face, neck, and hair. Leave it for around 20-25 minutes then wash your face with normal tap water and your hair with a mild sulfate-free shampoo.
It will rejuvenate your skin and make your hair stronger than ever.
Oiling hair
Oiling your hair one night before washing is the best practice I learned as a child. Hair oiling or Champi (in Indian terms) has several benefits including blood circulation, healthy scalp, and stronger roots. Oiling hair is the traditional way of giving yourself a pleasant spa. You can address any hair problem at the roots. Keeping in mind the issue you want to tackle, pick the oil accordingly.
For dry scalp and itchy scalp: Coconut oil.
For hair growth: Mix 1 tablespoon of Castor oil with two tablespoons of Coconut oil or Almond oil.
Bonus tip: Add 2-3 drops of Lavender Essential oil in your regular oil to lessen the anxiety and stress.
Gram Flour
Gram flour is commonly known as besan (in India) works wonders in keeping acne at bay. Gram flour has uncountable benefits for the skin. Many celebrities including Priyanka Chopra, a leading Indian actress also use this miraculous ingredient in their day-to-day routine. Regular use of Gram flour in your skincare regime will help you get rid of stubborn tan, pigmentation, and blemishes. Besan is said to be the best alternative for soaps.
How to use:
Take one tablespoon of besan and add a pinch of turmeric for added benefits then mix it with :
- one tablespoon of curd (for oily or combination skin)
- one tablespoon of milk (for dry skin)
Leave it for around 15 minutes then gently scrub it off and wash your face with normal water.
Household chores for Glowing skin
Household chores like cleaning up the house will save you from the extra time you're going to put in working out at the gym. It is the perfect cardio you ever need. And which in turn will improve blood circulation and leave your skin looking glowing. So yes beauties, grab an old cloth or broom and dust off every corner of your house.
Added Benefit: Your mother will be so proud of you (Wink).
Fuller's earth or Multani mitti is best known for its oil- absorbing properties. The use of Multani mitti in skincare and haircare regimes in India dates back to the 19th century.
How to use:
Take one tablespoon of Multani Mitti and add enough Rosewater to get the consistency that is not runny and not so thick at the same time. Apply it on your face and neck and leave it for 10-15 mins.
Substitute: You can substitute Rosewater with Normal water.
People with oily or combination skin can use this clay mask once a week but it's not suggested for dry skin as it can suck out some essential oils from your skin and leave it looking dull & stretched.
